Amy Moore Below are the award winners for the 7th Annual Grafton Cold F-F-Feet 5K, a cross country road race held on the trails around Grafton High School in York County. The race was held on Saturday morning, February 5, 2011. The 5K is sponsored by the Grafton High School Boosters. The race was
conducted by the Peninsula Track Club.
Conditions at race time were challenging, especially for a race on
trails. For the 2 hours prior to the race, a cold steady rain fell.
Then at race time the rain let up for the most part leaving cool and
cloudy conditions with temperatures in the mid-upper 40s. However the
course (which is a new out-and-back course) made up of the cross country
trails around and adjacent to the Grafton High School athletic fields was
very wet and muddy. The course finished at the school. The course was
accuratly measured, but is not USATF certified.
162 runners entered the 5K (down from 192 in 2010) with 122 runners
completing the course (down from 150 in 2010). Attendence was likely
down due to the rainy conditions Saturday morning. |

Scholarship 5K Run held on the trails in Sandy Bottom Nature Park in
Hampton. Awards went to the top 3 men and women overall and the top 3 in each age group. The race was held on Saturday morning, February 12,
2011. Proceeds go to support the Peninsula Track Club Joe & Sue Moore
Memorial College Scholarship. The race was organized and conducted by
the Peninsula Track Club.This was also the first race in the Peninsula Track Club 2011 Grand Prix
series. 158 runners entered the 5K (up from 135 in 2010) with 137 runners completing the 5K (up from 117 in 2010). The race was completely on trails within the Sandy Bottom Nature Park and is not USATF certified. Conditions at race time were clear but cold, temperatures in the 30s with a breeze. |

Below are the award winners for the 13th Annual Fort Eustis 10K held at
Fort Eustis, VA. The race was held on Saturday morning, March 5, 2011
sponsored by the Fort Eustis MWR. The race was conducted and results
were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were perfect for running, partly cloudy with a breeze and temperatures in the
50s.
231 runners entered the 10K (up from 182 in 2010 - just shy of the record
of 236 runners in 2007) with 203 completing the race (up from 168 in
2010). The course was USATF certified (VA-02048-RT) and the course was run as certified. The race started and finished at Anderson fieldhouse on Fort Eustis. This is the 2nd race of the 2011 Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix series. |

Below are the award winners for the 2011 10K Run for the Heart held on
Saturday morning, April 2, 2011. The race was sponsored by the Knights
of Columbus Council 5480 for the benefit of the American Heart
Association.
The 10K course started on Stable Road in Newport News Park, Newport News, VA. The course was on roads and trails within the park. Despite recent days of rain and cloudiness, Saturday cleared and was a good day for running. Partly cloudy skies, a breeze and temperatures in the upper 40s at race time made for decent running weather. The trails in Newport News Park were in decent condition with some slightly moddy or wet spots.
A record 104 runners entered the 10K (down from the record 165 runners in
2010) with 90 completing the race (down from 145 in 2010). The poor
weather of the previous week may have kept race numbers down.
Results are provided by the Peninsula Track Club. The course, which was
changed slightly this year due to construction on the Dam #1 bridge, was accurately measured, but is not USATF certified. The 10K Run for the
Heart is the 4th race in the 2011 Peninsula Grand Prix Race Series. |

Awards went to the top 3 male and female runners overall and the top 3 in each age group. The race was held on Saturday morning, April 16, 2011
and was organized to raise awareness for Aplastic Anemia, Paroxsymal
Nocturnal Hemoflobinuria and Myelodysplastic Syndrome. The race itself was conducted by the Peninsula Track Club.
155 runners entered the 5K race (up from 104 in 2010) with 128 completing the course (up from 90 in 2010). The race started at Poquoson High School, followed a loop course on Odd Road and finished at the Poquoson Elementary School. The course is accurately measured but is not USATF certified. Conditions at race time were cool with a breeze and cloudy, temperatures around 60. |

The race, sponsored by the Junior League of Hampton Roads, was held on Saturday morning, April 23, 2011 and was organized to raise awareness of female reproductie cancer adn provide support services for women in Hampton Roads. The race itself was conducted and race results generated by the Peninsula Track Club.
293 runners entered the 5K race with 238 completing the course. The race
was run over the flat City Center course in the Oyster Point area of
Newport News and is accurately measured but is not USATF certified.
Conditions at race time were perfect for running, cool and cloudy with a
slight breeze and temperatures around 60. |

Below are the award winners for the 5th Annual Lytle Law 5K held at the
City Center in Oyster Point, Newport News, VA. The race was held on
Saturday morning, May 21, 2011 for the benefit of Children's Hospital of
the King's Daughters. The race was conducted and results were generated
by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were clear, sunny with temperatures around 70.
The run, starting and ending near the Lytle Law Office just off Canon
Blvd, went on streets around the Oyster Point Business Park. The course is not USATF certified. 329 runners entered the 5K (down from 397 in 2010) with 279 completing the course (down from 339 in 2010).
The first male and female both set course records. Ryan Carroll, 28 of
Portsmouth ran a 16:17 for the male record while Karen Terry, 22 of
Hampton did the same for the women with a time of 19:29. In 2010, Murray
Britton, 30 of Norfolk ran a time of 18:53 and Kristi Popp, 26 of Hampton
had a time of 20:40 which were the previous records. |

Memorial Day/Grafton High School cross country course, Jim Sawhill
Below are the award winners for the 2011 Yorktown Freedom Run 5K held on Memorial Day morning, Monday, May 30, 2011. The race course was a cross country course of some roads and mostly cross country dirt paths on the Grafton High School athletic fields and adjacent trails. The race
started and finished at Grafton High School. The race event was
organized and directed by the Yorktown Rotary Club. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were clear, sunny, warm and humid with
temperatures aorund 80.
314 runners entered the 5K (down from the record of 388 in 2010) with 299 runners completing the 5K (down from 368 in 2010). The 5K race course is not certified, but was accurately measured and was followed correctly by the runners.
Ryan Carroll, 27 of Portsmouth, winner of the event in 2010, was bested by Andrew Mearns, 22 of Williamsburg who had a time of 16:01 for the overall win. Ryan placed 2nd with a time of 16:10, 10 seconds off his 2010 time. 3rd Overall was John Piggott, 46 of Williamsburg (17:10).
However, Piggott was awarded 1st Master due to the higher prize money
awarded in that category.
Karen Terry, 22 of Hampton was the 1st woman (19:32). 2nd woman was
Arlyne Spalla-Benson, 42 of Yorktown (20:22) followed by 3rd woman
Katherine Irgens, 21 of Yorktown (20:40) and Connie Glueck, 47 of
Williamsburg in 21:03. Spalla-Benson and Glueck were placed as 1st and
2nd Master's Women due to prize money considerations.
Of special note was an award given to Jim Johnson, 85 of Hampton who has
been the first runner to register for this race for the last 20 years and
many times was the oldest runner. Jim was unable to run, but volunteered
for the event. |

Below are the award winners for the 4th Annual Chesty Puller Memorial
Twin Bridge 10K Run held in the Town of West Point, VA on Saturday
morning, June 25, 2011. The race honored the most decorated Marine in
history, Marine General Chesty Puller who lived in West Point, Virginia.
Proceeds from the race benefits the West Point Historical Society for the
purpose of creating a West Point Historical Museum and the Wounded
Warrior Project.
The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were typical mid-summer conditions, sunny, but slightly less humid with a breeze and temperatures in the lower 80s.
New this year was a Kids 1 Mile Run that started at the 10K start and ran
the first mile of the 10K course. 7 kids ran this inaugual event.
For the 10K, 131 entered the race (down from the record 185 runners in
2010) with 119 runners completing the course (down from 159 in 2010).
The course looped through downtown West Point, passing the home of Chesty Puller, over the Mattaponi River Bridge into King & Queen County, then back over that bridge, through downtown West Point, and continued for an out-and-back over the Pamunkey River Bridge into Eltham, then back again
over the bridge, finishing in West Point. The 10K course is USATF
Certified #VA-10031-RT and was followed correctly by the runners.
The 10K run was won by the 2010 winner, Ryan Speray, 20 of Gloucester who defended his 2010 win with a time of 36:03 (5:49 pace).
A notable performance was by the second place runner who was also the
first woman, Beth Floyd of Hubert, NC who set the course record for women
with a time of 37:14 breaking the record previously set in 2008 by Julia
Smith of Tappahannock (38:47)
Age group records were set by Molly Frazee, 26 of Richmond who set the
Women's 25-29 record with a time of 49:44 and Nancy Burleson, 62 of
Spruce Pine, NC for Women 60-64 with a time of 55:54 beaking the record of 1:01:31 that she prevously set in 2010. |

Below are the award winners for the 3rd Annual Yorktown Independence Day 8K Run held on the Tour Roads of the historic Yorktown Battlefield in
Yorktown, VA on Monday morning, July 4, 2011. The race was part of the
Annual Yorktown 4th of July festivities. The race event was organized and directed by Happy Pace Races. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were very warm and humid with hazy sunshine and some smoke likely from the wildfires in North Carolina drifting though the air.
Temperature at race time was around 80.
The 8K race course starts on the Tour Roads near the Route 17 overpass,
heads in the direction of George Washington's Headquarters, then follows the Tour Road over the bridge crossing back over Route 17 before turning right onto a section of trails that return the runners to Surrender Field and the finish of the 8K.
Despite the warm, humid and smokey conditions, a new course record for
men was set this year. Overall winer, John Holt, 20 of Williamsburg set
a new course record for the 8K with a time of 26:08 breaking the mark set
by Mark Tompkins in 2009 of 27:07. 2nd and 3rd overall runners, Caleb
Doan, 21 of Virginia Beach and Conor Doan, 20 of Virginia Beach were also
faster than the previous record with times of 26:21 and 26:44
respectively.
For the women, Arlyne Spalla, 42 of Yorktown successfully defended her
2010 title, winning the 8K again in 2011 with a time of 33:52. Emily
Webb, 21 of Gloucester and Rachel Rabbit, 16 of Yorktown were 2nd and 3rd women with times of 36:08 and 36:15 respectively.
New age group records were set for

A record 496 runners entered the 8K (up from 401 in 2010) with 458
runners completing the 8K (up from 369 in 2010) within the one and a half hour time limit.
The Yorktown Independence Day 8K is the fifth race in the 12 race
Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix Series.
The 8K course has been measured accuratly, but is not USATF certified at
this time. The course was followed correctly by the runners. |

Below are the award winners for the 23rd Annual Coast Guard Day 5K held
at Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, VA on Saturday morning,
August 6, 2011. The race event was organized by the Coast Guard Training
Center MWR. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were mostly sunny and very humid with temperatures in the low 80s.
A recored 327 runners entered the 5K (up from 240 in 2010) with a record
308 runners completing the race (up from 221 in 2010). The race started
near the gym on the Coast Guard base, went out the front gate onto the
Yorktown Battlefield, making a loop that went downhill to the Wormley
Creek Dam, then back uphill towards the Moore house before returning to
the Coast Guard Base through the main gate, finishing at the gym. The
course was a USATF certified 5K course (USATF cert. # VA-98020-RT -
recertification number pending) and was followed correctly by the
runners.
Awards for both male and female were given to the top 3 runners overall, top 3 runners in each age group, and top three active duty Coast Guard
personnel.
Two course records were set despite the warm, humid conditions. For the
men, Stephen Chantry, 56 of Williamsburg broke the age group course record for Men 55-59 previously set by Jim Thonton of Seaford, VA in 2009. Chantry's impressive time of 18:06 shaved over half a minute off Thonton's mark of 18:40.
For the women, Ann Hirn, 65 of Portsmouth, VA broke the age group course record for Women 65-69. Nancy Patron of Williamsburg set the Women's 65-69 record in 2002 with a time of 28:35. This year Hirn took over a minute off that mark with a time of 27:21.
The Coast Guard Day 5K was also the 6th Grand Prix race of the Peninsula
Track Club 2011 Grand Prix Race - a series of 12 road racing events
during the year that determine the PTC Grand Prix Champion. |

Conditions at race time were sunny, warm and humid with temperatures in the 70s at race time. The 5K run followed the Matteson Trail and was run correctly by the
runners. This course is not USATF certified.

At left are the award winners for the 11th Annual CNU/OYSTER POINTER 5K Fall Classic held at Christopher Newport University in Newport News on Saturday morning, September 17, 2011. The race was organized by the CNU Alumni Society with the Oyster Pointer magazine as primary race sponsor.
The race course starts and finishes near the Ferguson Center on the CNU
campus. The course went down Shoe Lane, turned on Moores Lane to Selden Road, then made a loop on Country Club, Central Parkway, Riverside Drive and back on Selden Road to return to CNU. This new course is a USATF certified 5K, cert. # VA-05028-RT. Runners ran the course as certified. Conditions at race time were breezey with a light rain and temperatures in the low 60s.

Below are the award winners for the 31st Annual Mulberry Island Half
Marathon & 5K held at Fort Eustis on Saturday morning, September 24,
2011. The race was sponsored by the Fort Eustis MWR. In addition the
Mulberry Island Half Marathon is the 9th of 12 Grand Prix races for the
Peninsula Track Club. The course started and finished near Anderson
Fieldhouse on Fort Eustis. Conditions for both the 5K and Half Marathon
were cloudy and very humid with temperatures in the low 70s.
Both the 5K and Half Marathon courses are USATF certified (USATF
#VA-02027-RT (5K) & #VA-02037-RT (HALF-MARATHON)) and were run as certified. Finsh line management and results services were provided by
the Peninsula Track Club. The results can also be viewed on the Club
website at www.peninsulatrackclub.com
A total of 334 runners (down from 358 in 2010) entered the races. 59
(down from 82 in 2010) completed the 5K and 226 (down from 242 in 2010) completed the Half Marathon. |

Below are the award winners for the 19th Annual Hilton 5K held in Hilton
Village in Newport News on Saturday morning, October 1, 2011. The race
was sponsored by the Junior Women's Club of Hilton Village. The course
started and finished on Main Street near the Junior Women's Club
Clubhouse, winding its way around the Hilton Village area.
In addition, the Hilton 5K is the 10th race of the Peninsula Track Club
Grand Prix series. Next race in the series is the Yorktown Battlefield
10 Miler on November 5.
At race time temperatures were great for running - around 60, partly
cloudy with a slight breeze and low humidity.
110 runners entered the 5K (down from 118 runners in 2010) with 106
runners completing the course (down from 114 in 2010). The course was
USATF certified (VA-93031-RT) and the course was run as originally
certified. The course remains unchanged since 1993. (Regarding the
certification number - it has been verified that the VA-93031-RT
certification number is correct and is an active certification for 2011.)
Finish line and results services were provided by the Peninsula Track
Club. A copy of the results and listings for future road races can be
found on the PTC website: www.peninsulatrackclub.com.
Overall winner for the men was Geophery Mills, 23 of Chesapeake with a
time of 16:21 who came within 5 seconds of the course record for Men
20-24 (16:16)
Susan Hagel, 38 of Norfolk who was the 2009 PTC Grand Prix Champion and is the current 2011 Grand Prix points leader was 1st Woman Overall, the first time Susan has won a Grand Prix event outright. Susan's time
Saturday morning was 21:26 and this was done after she ran the R.A.T.
Race in Norfolk on Friday evening with a time of 21:33.
Winston Collins, Sr., 70 of Newport News set a course record for Men
70-74 with a time of 21:48 breaking the mark set in 1998 by Peninsula
Road Running Hall of Fame member Andrew Polansky (21:54). |

Below are the award winners for the 10th Annual Smithfield Hog Jog 5K
held in Smithfield, VA on Saturday morning, October 8, 2011. The race
event was sponsored by Smithfield Foods, Inc. The race itself was
conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club.
Conditions at race time were beautiful, sunny with low humidity and
temperatures in the 60s.
The 5K course started near the Veterans Memorial in Historic Downtown Smithfield. The 5K course was accurately measured and run as measured, but is not certified at this time.
For the second year the Wild Hog Run was run simultaneously with the 5K.
Runners in the Wild Hog started and finished with the 5K runners, but ran
a different course during the run totaling 4.4 miles. New this year was
a scored team competition where the times for the fastest 4 runners on
each team was totaled with the fastest time winning. Eleven teams
competed this year.
A record 646 runners entered the 5K (up from 540 in 2010) with 606
runners completing the 5K or Wild Hog race (up from 514 in 2010). Victor
Flemming, 32 of Smithfield continued his dominance of the Hog Jog,
winning the 5K for the 4th year in a row in a time of 16:39. Karen
Terry, 22 of Hampton wom for the women with a very good time of 18:38.
Awards for both male and female were given to the top 3 runners overall, top 3 masters runners (40 and older) and top 3 runners in each age group. The top 3 Male and Female Wild Hogs were also given awards and the winning teams were recognised. |

Below are the award winners for the 11th Annual Mariners' Museum 10K on
the Noland Trail and the 2nd Annual Mariners' Museum 5K at the Park held
on Saturday morning, October 15, 2011. Proceeds from the event benefit
the Mariners' Museum Park and Noland Trail, the largest Privately owned and maintained park in the country.
Conditions at race time were perfect for running, sunny and windy with
temperatures in the 60s.
The Noland Trail 10K course starts at the Mariners' Museum on Museum
Drive, runs down towards River Road before doubling back to enter the
Noland Trail near the Museum Administration building. The 10K then
completes the circuit of the Noland Trail, across Lion's Bridge and
finally finishing in front of the Museum. The course, which is mostly on trails, is accurately measured and was run as measured, but is not USATF certified.
In its second year, the Mariners' Museum 5K at the Park starts at the
Peninsula Fine Arts Center on Museum Drive, runs down towards River Road
before turning right to make a loop in the Riverside neighborhood before
coming out on Museum drive and returning to a finish near the Museum
Administration building. The course is not USATF certified.
A total of 378 runners entered the events (up from 277 in 2010) with 208 entered in the 10K (up from 186 in 2010) and 170 entered in the 5K (up from 91 in 2010). 185 runners completed the 10K (up from 163 in 2010) and 165 runners completed the 5K (up from 84 in 2010). |

Below are the award winners for the 4th Annual Bobby Stewart 5K & 8K held at Williams Wharf Landing in Mathews, VA to benefit the
Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic and Ware Academy Scholarship and FinancialAid Fund. The races were held on Saturday morning, October 22, 2011.
The event was organized with the help of Ware Academy. The races were
conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club.
Conditions at race time were cloudy and breezy with temperatures in the
50s. A total of 119 runners entered the events, 97 in the 5K and 22 in the 8K.
Awards went to the top male and female runner overall in the 5K & 8K and to thetop 3 in each age group.
Neither course (5K or 8K) is USATF certified. |

At left are the award winners for the 18th Annual Yorktown Battlefield 10
Miler & 5K runs held on the tour roads of the Yorktown Battlfield on
Saturday morning, November 5, 2011 The race was sponsored by the
Yorktown Lion's Club.
Finish line and results services were provided by the Peninsula Track
Club. A copy of the results, links to pictures from the race and

The 10 Miler was also the 11th race in the 2011 PTC 12-race Grand Prix
Series.
Both courses started and finished near Surrender Field on the
battlefield. Conditions at race time for both races were clear, sunny
and very breezy; temperatures around 50 for both the 5K and the 10 miler.
A total of 243 runners entered the events (down from 273 in 2010). 153
runners completed the 10 Miler (down from 171 in 2010) which was
previously USATF certified VA-96039-RT - (currently awaiting
re-certification) and the course was run as previously certified. In the
5K, 75 runners completed the course, (down from 84 in 2010). The 5K
course is not certified. |

Below are the award winners for the 3rd Annual Making a Difference 8K Run & 3K Run/Walk held at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, VA on Saturday morning, November 12, 2011 The race was sponsored by Our Lady of Mount Carmel school.
Finish line and results services were provided by the Peninsula Track
Club.
Both courses started and finished at the same location on Musum Drive
near the Mariners' Museum. The course ran towards Lion's Bridge. 3K
runners made a turnaround while the 8K ran a loop near Country Club
Drive before returning to Lion's Bridge and heading back to the Mariners'
Museum. Both races finished in the parking lot of the Mariners' Museum.
The 8K course is USATF Certified VA10069RT. Both courses were run
correctly by the runners. Conditions at race time for both races were
sunny with a slight breeze; temperatures in the 40s at race time.
A total of 215 runners entered the events (down from 309 in 2010). 203
runners completed either the 3K or 8K races which were run and scored in
tandem.
It should be noted that in the 3K there were age group awards only (14
and under and 15 and over) but the first 10 finishers were all under 14
years old. |

Below are the award winners for the 2nd Annual NEWPORT NEWS JINGLE BELL 5K RUN & WALK for Arthritis held in Newport News Park in Newport News, VA on Saturday morning, November 19, 2011 The race was sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation.

The Jingle Bell 5K was a triple out-and-back course starting at the
Ranger Station on Constitution Avenue in Newport News Park. The course
ran the length of Constitution Avenue (two of the out-and-backs) with an
out-and-back section on Stable Road. The course is not USATF certified,
but was measured accurately (remeasured Saturday morning for mile mark placement) and was run correctly by the runners. Conditions at race time were sunny with temperatures in the 40s.
A total of 191 runners entered the 5K with 157 completing the course. |

Below are the award winners for the 5th Annual Run With The Son 5K held on the roads in and around the Running Man subdivision in Tabb, VA on
Saturday morning, December 3, 2011. The race was organized by the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church. The course is accurately measured, but is not USATF certified.
This race was also the 12th and final event in the 2011 PTC Grand Prix race series. The awards for the PTC Grand Prix will be presented at the Annual PTC Awards Banquet on January 21, 2012.
The conditions were perfect for running. Temperatures in the low 50s with bright sunshine and little wind. 194 runners entered the 5K (up from 162 in 2010) with 187 completing the race (up from 187 in 2010).
For only the second time in recent memory the fastest time for an open PTC race was recorded by a woman. Karen Terry, 22 of Newport News was
the first finisher overall with an impressive time of 17:53, breaking the course record for women of 18:37 that Karen set in 2010.
(Previously in the early 2000s, Anna Pichrtova, Olympic marathoner from the Czech Republic who was training in Wayneboro, VA was first runner overall at a 5.3 mile race put on by the PTC in Newport News Park)
Second runner overall in the Run with the Son 5K and first male was Todd Kessler, 29 of Newport News finishing a second later with a time of 18:38. Third finisher and second male runner was Nate Wallace, 29 of Yorktown (the 2009 winner) with a time of 18:05 followed by Jacob Clore, 17 of Yorktown with a time of 18:22.
Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico, 54 of Newport News was second woman overall with a time of 20:03 setting a course record for women 50-54, followed by Connie Glueck,47 of Williamsburg with a time of 20:30. Both MercedesCastillo-D'Amico and Connie Glueck are past PTC Grand Prix champions, Mercedes in 2009 and Connie in 2006. |

Below are the award winners for the 2nd Annual Langley Race Around the Base 10 Miler & 5K held at Langley Air Force Base, VA on Saturday
morning, December 10, 2011. The 10 Miler was USATF certified in 2010.
The conditions were cold and windy, temperatures in the mid 40s with a stiff breeze from the north off the bay. 123 runners entered the 10 Miler with 87 completing the course. 22 runners entered and completed the 5K.
Awards were for the first overall and first in each age group for both
